About the event

As a Senior Software Engineer, the path forward isn't always obvious. You're shipping good work, you're trusted by your team, but the leap to Staff can feel abstract. Expectations shift, the role looks different depending on the company, and nobody hands you a clear roadmap.

Engineering careers have changed too. Progression no longer means moving into management. Staff and Principal roles offer a genuine path for individual contributors who want to grow their technical depth and leadership without managing people, and we're seeing more of these roles appear across our clients.

Many of the engineers we work with want to take this path. So this session is focused on the real challenges, lessons, and mindset shifts involved in making that move.

What We'll Cover

The discussion will be shaped by the room, but themes are likely to include:

  • Establishing technical influence at scale — driving impact beyond your immediate team
  • Navigating the transition from Senior to Staff+ — what changes, what doesn't, and how to bridge the gap
  • Finding and shaping high-leverage work — identifying the problems worth solving and making them yours

Your Discussion Leads

Gary Hammett — Staff Software Engineer, PureGym

Jonathan Ruckwood — Staff Engineer, mapbox

Two engineers who've made the journey and can speak honestly about what it actually takes.

Why Attend?

Whether you're actively pursuing a Staff title or just want to understand what the path looks like, this evening offers real insight from people doing the job — not a polished talk, but a genuine peer conversation. Spots are limited to keep it intimate and valuable.
