About the event

We hosted a roundtable and networking session for experienced Manchester-based engineers exploring the transition from Senior Engineer to Staff and Principal-level individual contributor roles.

Bringing together Senior Engineers, Staff Engineers, Principal Engineers, Architects and Engineering Leaders from across the Manchester tech community, the discussion focused on what Staff+ leadership actually looks like in practice and how expectations are evolving as engineers progress beyond senior level.

While technical expertise remains essential, one of the strongest themes from the evening was that progression into Staff and Principal roles is increasingly driven by influence, communication, business understanding and the ability to create impact beyond your immediate team.

The session combined a peer-led roundtable discussion with networking, creating an opportunity for attendees to share experiences, challenges and lessons learned from their own career journeys.

Key discussion themes

Staff engineering is about influence, not authority

A recurring theme throughout the discussion was that Staff Engineers create impact through influence rather than formal management responsibility.

Attendees spoke about the importance of building trust, driving alignment across teams and helping shape technical decisions beyond their immediate area of ownership.

The move from execution to strategic thinking

Many engineers highlighted that the transition to Staff level is additive rather than subtractive.

The role isn't about writing less code. Instead, it involves balancing technical delivery with architecture, stakeholder management, mentoring, communication and long-term technical direction.

Technical ability alone isn't enough

While strong engineering fundamentals remain critical, attendees agreed that communication and collaboration often become the differentiating factors at Staff and Principal level.

Being known as someone who solves problems, builds relationships and gets things done frequently has a bigger impact on progression than technical expertise alone.

Product thinking is becoming a core engineering skill

The discussion explored the growing expectation that engineers understand not only how to build solutions, but why they are being built.

The concept of the "Product Engineer" emerged repeatedly, reflecting the increasing importance of connecting technical decisions to customer outcomes and business goals.

AI is changing engineering, but fundamentals still matter

AI generated some of the liveliest discussion of the evening.

While attendees acknowledged the growing value of tools such as Claude, Copilot and Codex for code reviews, learning unfamiliar technologies and improving productivity, there was strong agreement that engineering fundamentals remain essential.

The consensus was clear: AI is a powerful tool for engineers, but it cannot replace deep technical understanding, problem-solving ability or business context.

Career progression is becoming less linear

Another key takeaway was that engineering careers increasingly branch into multiple paths beyond Senior Engineer.

Staff Engineer, Principal Engineer, Architect, Platform Engineer and Engineering Manager all represent valid progression routes, each requiring different strengths and motivations.

Rather than waiting for a title, attendees discussed the importance of actively developing the skills and behaviours associated with the role they ultimately want to move into.

Why we host these events

At Burns Sheehan, we believe in doing more than recruitment. We build communities across the technology sector.

Our engineering roundtables bring together experienced technology professionals to share challenges, exchange ideas and learn from peers facing similar opportunities and decisions.

The conversations are deliberately open, practical and experience-led, helping attendees gain real-world insight into the challenges shaping modern engineering careers.

The Senior to Staff discussion reinforced a trend we're seeing across the market: progression beyond Senior Engineer is increasingly defined by influence, communication, commercial awareness and the ability to drive outcomes across an organisation.

We're looking forward to continuing the conversation at future Engineering Leadership events across Manchester and London.

At Burns Sheehan, we believe in doing more than recruitment, we build communities across the tech sector.

Our roundtables are designed to bring together like-minded engineering leaders to share challenges, opportunities, and the skills that define the next generation of tech leadership.

We’ve seen the real impact these conversations can have. From shared learnings to new collaborations, our previous sessions have sparked lasting connections and actionable insights across the tech community. Check out the take aways from a previous session here:
