Hiring 2 Directors of Software Engineering for PE-Backed IoT

The Challenge

CSL, a private equity-backed IoT critical connectivity business based in Watford, was looking to modernise its technology capabilities and build out its IoT offering. To do this, they needed to hire two Directors of Software Engineering to form a crucial middle management layer between their CTO, and the wider engineering teams.

Despite generating £30 million in annual revenue, CSL faced hiring challenges due to low brand visibility and a limited candidate network.

With a goal to fill both roles before the new year, they turned to Burns Sheehan, referred via their PE partner ECI Partners, to access a broader talent pool, position CSL more attractively in the market, and secure hires who could drive a technology transformation.

The Solution

Burns Sheehan partnered with CSL on a contingency search, delivered with retained-level service, to ensure speed and quality. Working closely with their CTO, HR Director and the leadership team, we:

  • Created a shortlist of seven high-quality profiles with structured feedback loops to refine the brief.

  • Elevated CSL’s employer brand through a bespoke candidate pack, positioning them as an innovative player in IoT despite their low market profile.

  • Advised on realistic market expectations, helping shape competitive offers by emphasising equity and long-term benefits over short-term perks.

  • Maintained frequent, two-way communication with multiple weekly calls, clear deliverables, and tight timelines.

  • Consulted on process elements, including job specs and candidate experience, to ensure a smooth and engaging journey for applicants.
