In today’s chapter of our “Where Can Recruitment Take You?” we’ll be speaking with a Human Resources professional from the Media industry (who’d like to remain anonymous) about their experiences in recruitment and how it’s shaped their career.

Firstly, please tell me a bit about yourself…

I’m working in the HR department of a global media business, based in Central London. I moved here after working as a consultant for a large recruitment agency.

And how did you start out in recruitment?

Working in recruitment was my first job after graduating. I didn't really know what I wanted to do, and recruitment seemed like a great option given the fact that you can earn more than a basic salary through commission. I was attracted to the accelerated career progression opportunities and diverse set of skills you can acquire in recruitment.

What aspects of your initial experience are still relevant to you today?

Recruitment gave me some crucial skills that I still use today. It gave me the ability to create conversation and speak with people more confidently. I was trained to drill down into the detail and gain value from every conversation I have. But mostly, being a recruiter taught me how to be commercial which is relevant to any role in business. As a recruiter you need to understand what is valuable to an organisation and understanding how your client makes money.

What has been the most valuable thing you’ve learnt during your time in recruitment?

Resilience. In recruitment things don’t always go your way. When things go wrong it offers an invaluable lesson on how you can do things differently next time around. My time in recruitment has stopped me being a defeatist and taught me to try and try again as your efforts will be rewarded.

What advice would you give to someone considering recruitment as a career?

Are you passionate about discovering what people want and building strong relationships? Passion equals success.

Thanks
