Head of Engineering - We are working exclusively with an amazing start-up to find them a Head of Engineering as they look to scale their business and products. They are building a marketplace platform that is opening a market to the increasing number of people engaging in that activity. We have worked with the CTO for 13 years and he's not only a great technologist but genuinely 'good guy' who has built a curious, fun, humble engineering team where egos are left at the door and everyone's opinion is valued. They have an office in Central London but operate a very flexible remote working policy with a guide of 1 day in the office a week.

The Head of Engineering will lead and manage the engineering function across Front End, Back End, Mobile and Data and there is a strong bias for execution and getting stuff done. It will offer an increasingly strategic focus but for now it's about getting close to the Engineers and delivering quality products. The Head of Engineering will own the platform architecture so you will need to be technically strong - There's a lot of complexity in the use cases that you'll need to understand.

Tech Stack: Typescript, React, Node, Python, Vercel/GCP, Serverless, PaaS.

What does the Head of Engineering's first 12 months look like?

There are many exciting challenges for the Head of Engineering including…

  • Building the team - There are 15 in engineering with plans to grow next year and they want to attract top talent by offering an inclusive and exciting working environment.
  • Execution - They are integrating new supply partners and optimising their order management and delivery processes. You will ensure the engineering team is efficient in it's execution with clear goals and correct process to allow them to reach their potential.
  • Mobile - What to do with mobile? Do they build a team or use a partner? What mobile stack should they choose? They're looking at loads of things around AR/VR and you will help shape these decisions.

Who will the Head of Engineering be?

This is a guide rather than a definitive list of our attributes:

  • The Head of Engineering needs to have good ecommerce experience, preferably in a marketplace, as you will bring valuable domain knowledge.
  • You will have been through a previous journey scaling a team/business and will be excited to do it again at an earlier stage with more influence/impact. If it's a VC-backed growth stories then even better!
  • You will need a track record of attracting and retaining talent - Top quality at speed. The bar has been set high with initial hires and they want to keep that up, especially in this role too!
  • Culture is huge for them - You will 'get' the mission and the role but won't be hung up on the 'Head Badge'. They don't have any hierarchy of titles in engineering and have cultivated an egoless culture. You must know how to foster collaboration, encouraging opinions while creating a common vision for the team.
