Do you have the mindset of a start-up Head of Engineering, focusing on building teams and processes while driving the delivery of quality products?

Head of Engineering - An exciting, award-winning PropTech start-up, well backed by big names in the Insurance and Finance world, is looking for a Head of Engineering as they embark on the next part of their journey. They are building a new marketplace that will disrupt the property rental market in the UK offering financial freedom to their customers, with a range of new B2B and B2C products. Their C-Suite is UK based with a remote engineering teams based in both Europe and India. The plan is to raise Series B in Q2 2021 and then build out the engineering team in London/UK.

What will you do as Head of Engineering?

The Head of Engineering will oversee the design and delivery aspects of the B2C and B2B platform. You will work with product owners, technical leads and engineers to delivery best in class solutions to satisfy business needs and key metrics.

  • Ensure with the CTO that there is a clear and consistent strategy that is executable with the engineering team(s).
  • Working closely with the product managers to breakdown stories into actionable work ensuring that work adheres to the Definition of Ready.
  • You will work with the product managers and technical leads to ensure that there is the right combination of features, technical debt and operational platform work according to business priority.
  • You will ensure that the appropriate agile (small a) ceremonies are in-place and working to the best needs of the team and business. This includes refinement of work for iterations, planning sessions and stand-ups.
  • Manage team capacity, estimation to ensure the team is able to provide an appropriate view of work and suggest potential completion dates.
  • You will carry out continuous improvement with the teams to ensure best practices around development process, operational processes and technical debt.
  • Manage recruitment with the team by writing job specifications, developing hiring processes and managing the recruitment funnel.
  • Ensure that the engineering team(s) have sufficient tooling and support.
  • Understand and work with the platform team on rolling out capability projects (e.g. business rules engine, transaction categorisation engine), devops projects (API Gateway, AWS X-Ray) and data projects.

What will their Head of Engineering bring?

  • Strong experience of managing technical teams between 10-20 people.
  • A background as a Software Engineer, although this isn't a hands-on coding role.
  • Knowledge of Cloud based platforms (AWS, GCP).
  • Strong technical background and understanding of software engineering - agile processes, release management, version control.
  • Experience building B2C/B2B software platforms;
  • Experience of working in high growth fast paced start-up environment would be beneficial.
  • Excellent communication skills with experience working with all levels of business.

If you have any of the following that would be a bonus…

  • Experience of Python or Java.
  • Hands on experience of AWS/GCP Cloud platforms.
  • Knowledge of data-science, data engineering and building data platforms.
  • Experience working with microservice architectures.
