Last Thursday saw our last tech meetup of 2019 as TrendingJS took over the Financial Times HQ, Bracken House. Located in the heart of the City besides St. Paul’s, we were joined by over 100 members of London’s JavaScript community and our three guest speakers from The Financial Times, Bulb Energy & Photobox Group Security. As our third JavaScript event this year in London, it was great to see a mix of new and old faces in the room and an assorted mix of topic talks from our speakers.
Our first speaker of the evening was Lachie Murray, Senior Software Engineer in the Smart Team at Bulb Energy. Bulb have continued to make waves across the UK as the technology start-up revolutionising the UK energy industry and supplying 100% renewable electricity to homes across the UK.
Lachie and his team were responsible for building a tool to optimise the efficiency of Bulb's smart meter installation service using TypeScript, Python & GPRC. Sharing details of the challenges they faced and lessons learnt along the way, he highlighted the importance of agile working in the ever-changing tech landscape.
Up next was seasoned speaker Sonya Moisset. Lead Security Engineer at Photobox Group Security, Sonya is a tech advocate and public speaker in the UK tech scene. Using examples from none other than Trump’s 2016 election campaign, her talk ‘Keep Calm and Fasten Your Seatbelt’ took us through techniques to protect our computers, networks, programmes and data from unauthorised access and attacks. The third and final talk of the evening was from Senior Developer at The Financial Times, Ændrew Rininsland, who took a break from covering the forthcoming General Election to talk us through the process of ‘Generating dynamic SVG using GraphQL and AWS Lambda’.
At the post event drinks at the Old Change and in conversations with several attendees since, the event seems to have served its purpose – to integrate ourselves with the tech community and get closer to those we speak to every day. As mentioned by Chris Spranklen (Burns Sheehan’s Managing Director) at the end of the evening, we’re busy planning our event schedule for 2020 and have a whole host of exciting tech talks lined up for the new year.
