Oliver Lochhead

Welcome to our staff corner, where we’ll introduce you to the members of the Burns Sheehan team!

Exciting things are afoot for the Burns Sheehan gang, with our second UK office due to open this March in the wonderful city of Manchester. Read all about it here.

Today we'll be speaking with one of our newest team members, Oliver Lochhead, to find out what makes him tick.

Hey Oliver! Welcome aboard! How did you come to work with Burns Sheehan?

I’d been working in technology recruiting for a while with another business when I was approached by a Rec to Rec about an opportunity with Burns Sheehan. Burns Sheehan had always been known to me as leaders in the industry, with a great reputation. Lots of people I was working with spoke really highly of Burns Sheehan and I was interested in pursuing the chance to work here. I wanted to be part of a growing business with a clear vision.

What do you think the best thing about recruitment is?

I really enjoy the daily interaction with all kinds of people – I get to have such a broad range of conversations which develop my knowledge. Having the opportunity to help people transform their careers, and be responsible for facilitating candidates to move in to life changing roles as well as developing relationships with clients and making the recruitment process an enjoyable experience from a hiring prospective.

What’s the worst thing about recruitment?

The difficult lies in the fact that you’re working with people – with opinions and changes of heart. Although it’s also the best part of the job, it can make things very unpredictable. There is a fair amount of rejection in the recruitment industry, and even for the strongest, most resilient people it can be quite difficult.

Very true! What is your area of specialism?

I’m working in the Infrastructure team, focussing on mid to senior level roles. My background is across development and infrastructure - I’m from a small agency background so I’ve had exposure to a few different markets.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

I liked the idea of being a tailor when I was younger - my grandad was a tailor and I always thought it was a cool job.

Fascinating! Who do you think would play you in the film of your life?

Will Ferrell…or Bradley Cooper.

Wise choices, I'm not sure I can chose which one is more fitting...What do you like to do in your spare time?

I’m a very sociable person, I go out most weekends with friends and often go to live music events and festivals. I like watching sport - Rugby and football in particular and I’m a Palace fan.

Ah the famous Red and Blue...Do you have any guilty pleasures?

Wine and Cheese…

Great combo. What’s at the top of your bucket list?

I’d like to learn to speak Spanish fluently. I’d also love to swim the channel.

What advice would you give someone thinking about a career in recruitment?

You need to have a great deal of resilience and self-motivation. We’re fortunate enough here not to be micro-managed, we’re trusted to organise our time effectively. Taking the rough with the smooth is a key trait of a successful recruiter. The kind of environment you’ll be working with will present you with such a diverse array of challenges – you just have to be prepared to put in the hard work in order to succeed.

And finally, how you would sum yourself up in an image?

Gosh. Thanks Oliver - it's been great!
