Welcome to our Staff Corner, where we introduce you to the members of the Burns Sheehan team!


Not to toot our own horn, but things are going pretty well at Burns Sheehan at the moment. Alan joined us as a Trainee Recruitment Consultant and has already been promoted to become a Delivery Consultant. He now works in the Digital team on a variety of roles across Development and Product Management.


I had the pleasure of being the first Burns Sheehan-er to meet Alan, and my goodness did he ‘wow’ us all from day one. He’s driven, pragmatic, composed and incredibly switched on and loved by everyone in the team. It’s hardly surprising he’s already hit his stride in technology recruitment.


But aside from being a bit of a genius, and a big bit of a gamer, what else do we really know about Alan? I sat down with the man to find out..




So, Alan, how did you come to work for Burns Sheehan?

When I came to this country I was approached about recruitment, but I had never heard of it before as it’s not a very big industry in South Africa. The job sounded interesting, but I didn’t persue it at that time because I didn’t want to tread on uncharted territory. So I went down the route of tech consultant at a huge company, and that sucked. After 18 months I left to work for a tech startup and was literally the second person they hired. But that wasn’t right for me either – it was too badgering and too sales driven. So I took a couple of months off to decide what I wanted to do with my life and see what is out there. Then I remembered being approached about recruitment and decided to explore this option again.


The reason I ended up eventually going into recruitment is because I actually met Burns Sheehan.  Baz and Burnsie sold their company to me and I was bought into their values. Because it was also in tech it ticked all the boxes for me.



What is the best thing about working in recruitment?

The by product that maybe some people forget: that moment when someone is actually really excited about the next opportunity and adventure and you helped them get there. Commission is great, but I don’t really care about that. Money is money and you can make it anywhere.



What do you think is the worst thing about recruitment?

There are no bad things! Alright, I can think of the worst thing - It’s having to look at bad CVs a lot of the time. There are probably more funny ones than bad ones, but reading one of those CVs still takes up a minute of my life.  



What do you like to do outside of work?

Gaming and drinking. I’m playing league of legends at the moment – it is an addiction and it is never going away.



What did you want to be when you were growing up?




Who would play you in a film and why?

Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting. Love the film, would love to play the role, and Robin Williams was right there in one of his best performances. I was also thinking Leonardo DiCaprio but he’s too short.



Biggest pet hate?

Labelling and social antidotes… they feel more like social segregation as oppose to humanity in unity.  



What would you say is your guilty pleasure?

Trolling people. [Laughs] Only kidding, it's probably League of Legends but I'm not guilty about that.



What is your most treasured possession?

My PC – it’s my baby.



What is at the top of your bucket list?

To start my own company and then, in a celebratory fashion, base jump off of a cliff.



If you could be any animal, what animal would you be?

A leopard.



What is the worst job you have ever have?

A paper boy. I did that for about two or three years and I was 14 years old. It took 40 minutes of my day, and I hated it … because it took up 40 minutes of my day.



If you were speaking to a student or a recent grad who were thinking about getting into recruitment, what advice would you give to them?

It’s not as bad as some people might make it out to be. But it’s only good if you choose the right place. You have to know where you are going to go and if you share the same values and if you are going to be able to be yourself. You need to know what you are getting yourself into so you can make the right choice.
